What is Home and Contents Insurance?

A Home and Contents policy will generally cover you for the following:

  • Building Insurance Covers the structure of your home. This also include your garage, fixed covering to walls, floors and ceilings, awnings and anything permanently built or installed on your property for  domestic purposes (including swimming pools).
  • Contents Insurance is designed to protect your belongings. This includes your carpets and internal blinds, furniture and furnishings, household electrical goods, swimming pools and spas not permanently installed, paintings, prints and rugs as well as clothing and other personal effects.
  • Liability Insurance covers you for any claim for compensation made against you for an incident which you become legally liable (eg. death or injury to any person or loss of damage to property).

Who needs Home and Contents Insurance?

All Home Owners should have a quality Home and Contents insurance policy

Tenants of rental properties should strongly consider taking out a Contents only policy to cover their own personal contents, as these are not covered by their landlords insurance policy.

Important Tips

  • When determining the value of your building, you need to make sure you insure your structure for the replacement costs 'at the time of loss', not the price in which you paid when you first purchased to     home.
  • If you work from home in a designated space eg. a home office, you may need to take out a separate business insurance policy to cover you for any damages occurring in this area, check with your broker     about your individual circumstances if you think this may apply to you.
