What is Boat Insurance?

A boat insurance policy ( or Marine / Pleasure craft insurance policy) provides cover for incidents that may occur both at sea and whilst your vessel is moored. This type of insurance is available for a wide range of boats from runabouts to luxury cruisers.

  • Boat insurance policies will generally cover you for:
  • Accidental loss or damage
  • death or injury to other people, including damage to their property
  • Third party liability
  • Personal injury
  • Outboard or auxiliary motor
  • incidents occurring whilst your boat is left unattended on a beach or moored
  • Optional cover for water skiing can be included

Who needs Boat Insurance?

You should consider arranging boat insurance if;

  • You own a boat, from a runabout to a large vessel
  • You are using your boat within 250 nautical miles off mainland Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand North and South Islands.

Important Tips

It doesn't matter whether you own a runabout, a cruiser, or a racing yacht. You cannot predict what will happen to third parties on the water. Cover is provided for death or bodily injury to a third party arising from an incident covered under the policy. Not having insurance could mean you are left with a hefty medical bill or a repair for a large vessel.
